Mining is one of Canada's largest export industries. This research is directly aimed at improving thecompetitiveness of a Canadian engineering consulting company through a better understanding of thebehaviour of slurries for the mining industry during transport in full, or partially-full, pipes. The goal of thework is to create both numerical simulations and experimental flow visualizations of poly-disperse,non-Brownian suspension during gravity settling and pipe transport. This is the first phase of a potential 2.5year collaborative program with Fluor Canada Ltd. Here, we will evaluate the potential of using both advancednumerical and experimental techniques, currently available at UBC, to characterize the settling behavior ofsuspensions applicable to the mining industry. Successful completion of the ENGAGE grant will lead to asecond phase of the work sponsored by and NSERC CRD grant.
