The overarching objective of this 2-year project is to optimize the conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) captured as an aqueous bicarbonate solution directly into carbon-based building blocks (e.g., carbon monoxide; CO) for fuels and chemicals of economic value. This strategy will enhance the value of CO2 capture processes by integrating carbon capture and utilization technologies and creating new revenue streams for captured CO2. This project is funded by the globally-integrated energy company TOTAL, which is investigating the commercial viability of deploying integrated industrial carbon capture and utilization platforms. The short-term goals of this project are to optimize electrolyzer technology that has been developed by the Berlinguette Group (UBC) to efficiently convert the bicarbonate solutions produced by a CO2 capture processes developed by CO2 Solutions, Inc. (Quebec City, QC). The long-term goal is to develop an end-to-end pilot system capable of capturing and converting 1 tonne of CO2 per day in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously contributing to the growth of the Canadian economy.
