This project aims at taking the first critical steps to innovatively introduce an exceptionally cost-effective composite product, WEAV3D composite lattice, to the construction industry. WEAV3D lattice is composed of fiber reinforced thermoplastic tapes, which have been woven and bonded into a lattice structure using an innovative lattice forming process. The proposed research will experimentally examine the bond characteristics of WEAV3D composite lattice embedded in concrete samples. Innovative changes to the manufacturing process to reach acceptable bond characteristics will be examined. The research will result in a novel WEAV3D product, which is suitable for the construction industry. The use of WEAV3D lattice in the construction industry will eliminate the durability problem associated with corrosion of steel reinforcing bars, which is a major economic problem for Canadian structures. Their lightweight, as compared to steel bars, will also reduce the construction time, and eliminate construction risks associated with handling of steel reinforcing bars. WEAV3D lattice will also help addressing climate change challenges by reducing the reliance on steel reinforcing bars, which impact the environment due to the damaging air emissions, wastewater contaminants, and hazardous wastes released during their manufacturing process.
