Founded in 2010, Motsai provides smart sensor product development and technical consultancy services by supporting the full product life cycle from proof-of-concept prototypes to volume production. They solve complex problems that require custom solutions for industries including industrial cleaning, agriculture, and mining. Motsai would like to develop a small modular and configurable Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) device that has multiple data transfer methods so it can be customized to be used by their clients in restricted spaces without the need to introduce major hardware design changes. Conventional /smart sensor devices are closed systems that use one type of communications/data transfer (ex: WiFi, or Bluetooth, or Zigbee, or LoRa (Long Range)), which limits customization potential. Further, commercially available motion sensors that have expandable data transfer options are physically large and unsuitable to make fully contained small sensors. The subject IIoT device's name is MOUVION, and it will be an excellent proof of concept (PoC) baseline technology upon which Motsai will build solutions for clients. The Mohawk College IIoT team led by Dr. Esteve Hassan, NSERC Industrial Research Chair for Colleges (IRCC) - Interoperability Sensor Systems and IIoT has electronics, firmware, software, and sensor expertise and experience to support Motsai investigating and developing MOUVION. This project will develop a PoC prototype that has an inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor, and selectable data transfer methods (WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, and LoRa). MOUVION will help Motsai by reducing IIoT product development time; addressing the stated client needs; and opening new markets to create additional revenue. This work will benefit both Motsai and their clients in the Canada IoT market, which is forecast to reach $21.8B in 2023 .
