Improving the Efficiency of Biocord Technology for the Treatment of Mine Water in Cold Climate

Considering versatile utilization of water in mining activities, huge amount of contaminated effluent is currently produced. In gold mine compagnies, the use of Ammonia Nitrate Fuel Oil (ANFO) for detonation and cyanide for precious metal recovery is generally leading to metal cations and oxyanions dissolution resulting in a highly contaminated effluent containing thiocyanate (SCN-), cyanate (OCN-), ammonia (NH4+), heavy metals and metalloids. Through this project, the Centre Technologique des Résidus Industriels (CTRI) will work with Bishop Water Technologies Inc. to assess a new technology named ''BiocordTM'' in order to eliminate N-based compounds from mining effluents which has proven to have negative impacts on the ecosystem. The data of this ongoing research project will provide Bishop Water with insight into potential technology that will help industry efforts to effectively treat N-based compounds (NBCs) in mining industry while respecting stringent regulations.
