The rapid growth of the market for batteries of all types to meet the demand for electric vehicles will generate millions of tonnes of waste when these lithium batteries reach their end of life. To reduce their environmental impact and ensure availability of critical metals, in particular lithium, the development of recycling technologies is essential. The new generation all-solid state batteries (ASSB) types lithium metal polymer LMP® produced by the company Blue Solutions have great performance but are more complex in their structure. Several pyro- and hydro-metallurgical methods are proposed in the literature for recycling lithium-ion batteries, while ASSB recycling approaches are relatively poorly documented. In view of the complexity of the structure of these types of batteries, it is necessary to explore recycling approaches adapted to these batteries. Recycling of LMP® battery type of ASSB presents several challenges associated with the highly adhesive characteristics of the polymer and reactive properties of metallic lithium which can cause problems with mechanical separation methods and aqueous processes. This research project, in partnership with Blue Solutions, aims to develop hydro-metallurgical approaches for the recycling of constituents of lithium metal polymer batteries. Pre-treatment tests with high pulsed power (HPP) of battery cells and dissolution tests of the various components will be applied followed by techniques for separating the solubilization products. The results that will be obtained in this project will allow progress in the field of recycling of solid-state batteries and will improve the economic and environmental benefits for the company Blue solutions.
