There is an increasing societal demand for polymer materials that are more environmentally friendly. In response, many countries, including Canada, are supporting renewable resourced materials development
through the adoption of favorable legislatures, among other efforts. Advances in renewable polymers that could be made available in large quantities at low cost while satisfying various functional requirements and while safe are extremely important in achieving this ultimate goal. This project aims to develop polymeric films from renewable resources that simultaneously provide rapid biodegradation, high oxygen and moisture barrier for inexpensive food packaging applications. Since the functional attributes required in the films is diverse, multiphase and multilayer film designs will be investigated. To ensure that the developed product is environmentally friendly, green processes will be employed throughout the fabrication process.
