The world is becoming increasingly technological and connected. This enables individuals and organisations to exchange information, work and make decisions together, and share resources and knowledge. This technological revolution enables new forms of collaborative networks of people and organisations in various domains. Collaborative manufacturing and logistic systems are such networks. They are Complex Adaptive Systems made of distributed facilities, people, or service centres operating under the polycentric control of collaborating organisations and/or individuals. These systems can take many forms, such as collaborative enterprises (i.e., enterprises exchanging operational information and making decisions together), industrial ecosystems (i.e., enterprises exchanging by-products or sharing resources), virtual enterprises (i.e., enterprises assembled on-demand or enterprises integrated with information technology), cloud manufacturing (i.e., new manufacturing paradigms based on the integration of distributed manufacturing services used on-demand), resource sharing (e.g., UBER), and the Physical Internet (i.e., freight transport model inspired by Internet). These distributed and collaborative systems are central to this program, whose long-term vision is to create innovative ways to take advantage of the continuous technological progress that enables new forms of collaboration and interaction mechanisms between people, organizations, and technology. This long-term vision is not limited to any domain or methodological approach. It brings together different paradigms, concepts, methodologies and technologies to create new interaction models, tools and decision support systems for Collaborative manufacturing and logistic systems. The next five years of this program will focus on the development of new methods with which to study, design and operate such systems with an emphasis on two application domains: industrial ecology and circular economy; and supply chain collaboration. In order to achieve these general objectives, this program proposes five MSc projects and two PhD projects. The contribution of this program is significant because it addresses a growing need of service and manufacturing industries, which is to optimize how companies, organizations, and people exchange information, collaborate, recycle by-products or jointly plan their operations to be competitive and environmentally sound, by exploiting the advanced decision support technologies this program will develop.
