The importance of Supply Chain Management (SCM) in improving construction management performance has been recognized since the 1990s. Nevertheless, still many projects take a longer time to finish and run over budget. Also, logistics planning and optimizations models are not well adapted to the recent developments of technologies such as Building Information Modeling (BIM). Before the introduction of BIM technology, there were many attempts to assist CSC actors through the major construction phases by providing decision models and methods for strategic, tactical and operational planning. Optimization techniques are also exploited in many cases for improving productivity in CSCs. With the technological advancement and prevalence of BIM modeling in the architectural, engineering, and construction industry, new opportunities exist for improving logistics planning. By combining the built-in intelligence of BIM with previous research efforts, recent studies have tried to propose logistics optimization models using data from BIM to enhance automatic project schedule generation or to optimize the exploitation of interior storage spaces in buildings and facility layout and material handling. Although these studies showed the potential to improve productivity in the construction industry, there is still a need for enhanced and new innovative CSC models. Therefore, in this research program, we will consider CSCM within the context of BIM. The long-term research objective is to provide an automated BIM-based framework for construction supply chain management. Using automatic data extraction from a BIM file, we will develop sophisticated supply chain optimization models that fit the reality of construction projects. Here, the critical decisions for CSC planning (strategic, tactical and operational) are conducted in the early phase of planning based on data provided by BIM. In this way, it is possible to interact with the designer very rapidly for revisions, and finally, provide more precise estimation for budget and project schedule. The innovation of our approach is that CSCM will be easily integrated into the design phase, offering the possibility to increase collaboration between designers and CSC stockholders, which is one of the critical challenges in managing complex projects in construction. To address these issues and achieve the long-term objective, the applicant will organize the research program into three short-term goals. The first goal is to develop the system architecture for data extraction from BIM, ready to be used for construction supply chain management. The second goal of the research program will focus on the development of a new multi-objective supply chain optimization models connected to the “CSMC-BIM” model. Finally, the third goal is to develop decision-making models for risk mitigation in BIM-based CSCM.
