The CPP+ MRS personnel, for whom we request continued support, combined synergistically with infrastructure resources principally based at the University of Alberta (Alberta), the University of Toronto (Toronto) and York University (York), but also involving the UBC and the University of Regina (Regina), have enabled the creation of the unique CPP+ national resource. This resource enables and facilitates the effective access of Subatomic Physics (SAP) researchers to a number of major international resource centres, namely: BNL (USA), CERN (Switzerland), JLab (USA), the Kamioka Observatory (Japan), the IceCube Neutrino Observatory (IceCube), SNOLAB, and TRIUMF. The CPP+ projects range from underground physics at SNOLAB (DEAP, PICO, SNO+) and IceCube/PINGU, through long baseline neutrino physics with the T2K experiment to QCD physics with the Super High Momentum Spectrometer (SHMS) in Hall C at JLab. Thence, to high-energy physics at the LHC (ATLAS, MoEDAL).
The CPP+ national resource contributes to ~50% of the projects constituting the entire Canadian Institute of Particle Physics (IPP) program. Additionally, the collaborations engaged in these projects involve the majority of SAP institutes in Canada. In order to maximize the accessibility of the CPP+ resource its widely based Operating Committee (OPCOM) comprised of the ten coapplicants on this request and one external member, the Director of IPP, and chaired by its Principal Investigator, continues to provide free, fair and merit driven access to all SAP researchers. This access is web based and available primarily via links available on the IPP and Canadian Institute for Nuclear Physics (CINP) websites. The CPP+ MRS resources are publicized through presentations given at appropriate venues, such as the IPP Town Hall at the Canadian Association of Physicists Congress in 2017. The IPP Director was included in our OPCOM in order to provide arms length oversight and community wide optimization of manpower infrastructure resources across all SAP MRS grants.
To sustain this national CPP+ MRS resource we need to retain support for an engineer, a detector technologist, and an electronics technician at Alberta and an engineer based at Toronto. The Toronto Engineer listed in the previous MRS application has now retired and we will be seeking to replace him by an entry level, although fully accredited mechanical engineer. These knowledgeable, skilled and experienced personnel are invaluable assets in the arena of design, construction and testing of state-of-the-art detector and electronic systems for forefront particle s leading experiments - and vital in the training of HQP. They are also absolutely vital to handle the load of diverse, specialized and demanding projects submitted to the resource, recognizing that the demand for service is rarely uniformly balanced across the year.
