According to Canadian Infrastructure report card 2019, a majority of the infrastructure that Canadian's rely on every day is more than 20 years old. A concerning amount of municipal infrastructure is reported to be in poor or very poor condition. As a result, it is important to constantly monitor structural safety and conduct immediate rehabilitation or replacement when needed. Structural health monitoring (SHM) of existing and new structures is one such tool that can be vital for determining the safe service life of a structure pre and post any events such as an earthquake. This proposal has been developed by Dr. Gupta who leads the Facility for Innovative Materials and Infrastructure Monitoring (FIMIM) at the University of Victoria (UVic). This proposal is in response to a request from the District of Saanich. The goal of this partnership is to perform condition assessment and SHM on a 50+ year old reservoir on Mount Tolmie. According to the information provided by the District, the reservoir was constructed in 1966 and went through a seismic retrofit in the mid-90s. This District would like to develop a baseline for this structure which will be key to determine remaining service life of this structure. In this pilot project, real-time monitoring will also complement the current maintenance protocols in place and assist city staff to make informed decisions about repairs and maintenance in the future. This pilot project between the District of Saanich and UVic can potentially lead to similar applications of SHM at the other reservoirs and infrastructure in Canada.
