To design structures that withstand extraordinary events (e.g., fire), engineering approaches are necessary to more accurately evaluate the effects of fires on structures. This project provides the partner organization with a pathway to steer away from prescriptive methods in fire safety design and adopt more rational and performance-based design approaches. The prescriptive fire safety design leaves little or no opportunity for designers to take a rational and innovative engineering approach. The adoption of rational and performance-based methods in structural fire safety offers benefits in terms of safety, resilience, and economy for structures. However, it suffers from the lack of systematic design guidelines for defining performance objectives, design fire scenarios, and methods of analysis. The outcome of this research will provide a set of novel and fundamental knowledge to further promote the adoption of the performance-based design method in Canadian design codes. In the context of fire safety engineering, a reliability-based methodology will be employed, and the interdependencies between multiple physical domains will be studied. This project will identify the factors which have the greatest impact on the response of structures. After that, probabilistic characteristics is defined for parameters whose uncertainty had a strong influence on the response.
