Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) pose a significant threat to Canadian freshwater systems. Although important advances have recently been made, the environmental fate of PFAS is unclear and without full treatment options. The impact of PFAS at Canadian contaminated sites results from their widespread use in cosmetics, materials, and fire retardants. Contaminated sites are often located near surface water, but excavation and pump-and-treat systems are inefficient and costly. Effective in-situ treatment technologies are urgently needed, particularly for PFAS-impacted soils, pore water, and associated freshwaters. Therefore, this research aims to develop a Graphene Kidney: 1) to characterize the interactions between graphene and PFAS and its degradation products, and 2) to design an in-situ filtration technology to remediate PFAS from contaminated pore and groundwater. The goal is a technology that is economically viable, targets PFAS itself and also its partially degraded products, and results in PFAS-remediated freshwater that meets Canadian environmental regulations. Project 1 will expand on novel sequential extraction methods and take advantage of advanced analytical methods to quantify PFAS and its degradation products and to characterize interactions with graphene. Project 2 will explore the design of novel graphene-based filtration capabilities with potential applications for in-situ groundwater treatment of PFAS. The research team expertise spans graphene materials, contaminants environmental fate, wastewater treatment, numerical modelling, and remediation. This Alliance partnership will promote the training of highly qualified personnel (2 PhD candidates and 5 undergraduate research assistants) and to mobilize scientific knowledge. The results are intended for applications by our industry partner toward the commercialization of a Graphene Kidney. Benefits also include cost-efficient and environmentally sound solutions for the remediation of PFAS from freshwater systems, thereby improving water quality in Canada. The outcome of this Alliance proposal will strengthen Canada's position worldwide in state-of-the-art water remediation technologies.#(cr)#(lf)Les substances polyfluoroalkyliques (SPFA) représentent une menace considérable aux systèmes d'eau douce du Canada.
