The bitumen content in oil sands is the primary factor affecting the economic recovery of bitumen from oil sands. However, current methods for measuring the bitumen content are either time-consuming or unreliable. This proposal aims to develop an optical technique using advanced optical and signal processing technologies for rapid, accurate, and non-destructive measurements of the bitumen content in oil sands. The success of the proposed project will decrease the core analysis time by at least two orders of magnitude. The technology is critical for cost-effective and environment-friendly recovery of bitumen from oil sands.
