In our lab we developed a novel portable biosensor for uric acid detection via electrochemiluminescence. The product includes a sensing platform based on a Complementary metaloxide-semiconductor (CMOS) chip, a reader, and a vial of reaction buffer to mix with the target sample for chemiluminescence reaction. It can be used to track the level of uric acid and monitor for early signs of gout. The prevalence and incidence of gout are increasing worldwide. Approximately 5.2% of Canadian males and 2.4% of Canadian females are affected by gout, and the incidence of this disease increases with age. Therefore, it is important for people with gout disease or at high risk of gout disease to monitor their level of uric acid. Within the frame of this proposal, we will perform a market analysis to identify the potential of our device to compete with existing technologies available on the market. Market size, user-derived design specifications will be obtained for interactions with end users. Once the market analysis is completed, we will decide on the next steps, such as to move to the next phase of pilot testing and prototyping, and starting up a company. Overall, if successful, the project will allow for the development of novel technology for individuals suffering from gout disease, leading to an improved quality of life and lower disability adjusted life years.
