Methane and other contaminants come out of solution when oil is pumped to the surface from high pressure reservoirs. These gases are flared/vented because gas pipeline infrastructure is too costly. The Chair¿s research program will develop economic micro-refinery technology to produce hydrocarbons through high temperature, high pressure catalysis from wasted natural gas thereby reducing the environmental footprint of oil and gas operations. It integrates multiple catalytic reactions in a single vessel and achieves economies through mass manufacturing rather than scale. Oxygen partially oxidizes methane at 1000oC over transition metals to syngas then reacts to C5+ hydrocarbons at 260oC over Fe/Co.
