In the last decades, important technological advancements enable impressive photonic integration with large systems now implemented on a single chip such as optical switch matrices towards more practical implementation. The proposed research program is on the development of the necessary building blocks to develop novel multiplane energy-efficient architectures exploiting orthogonal propagation modes of optical carriers. The research results are further assessed the feasibility of neural networks mimicking the brain biological processing abilities towards more energy-efficient interconnection networks.
