Combustion emissions of carbon particles are a serious problem because of their adverse impacts on climate change and respiratory health. Canadian companies in the transportation and energy sectors are struggling to produce cleaner engines and power plants to meet ever-stricter government regulations. This research will address these issues by developing detailed computational tools and models of particle formation and emission. It will improve our fundamental understanding of how and why particles form, and how their emissions can be mitigated or eliminated. This research will help enable manufacturing of next-generation ultra-low emitting engines and power sources.
