As a Tier II CRC, Dr. Johnson has examined how universal and language-specific factors shape the emergence of spoken language abilities in infants and children. Her unique focus on acquisition in a linguistically diverse community has allowed her to discover a relationship between children¿s exposure to language variation at home and their performance on speech tasks in the lab. Here, Dr. Johnson proposes to further examine the impact of variable language input on perceptual and cognitive development. By better characterizing the broad range of developmental trajectories present in linguistically diverse populations, we position ourselves to better identify abnormal developmental trajectories.
