This research program creates insight and innovation based on progress during the first term of the Chair. Large areas of the North experience degradation of permanently frozen soil or rock, referred to as permafrost. This affects ecosystems, economic activity, and climate. The program will quantify changing subsurface material properties in degrading permafrost by simulation and measurement. Expected outcomes include innovative tools with demonstrable reliability, information on current and future permafrost, and HQP who are trained equally for careers in academia, government and industry. By improving predictive capabilities, this will benefit sustainable development, environmental conservation, and research in the changing North.
