Public health protection and water safety require interdisciplinary approaches. This CRC program integrates discovery of water contaminants with fundamental understanding of the potential health effects and new knowledge for devising effective solutions. The proposed novel analytical technology will enable identification of new water disinfection byproducts. Analytical quantification and toxicological studies of newly identified chemical byproducts will provide scientific basis for their health risk assessment. The mechanistic understanding of the chemical processes will guide engineering solutions to ensure safe drinking water. This program aligns with the university's priority, strengthens collaboration, and creates outstanding interdisciplinary training opportunities.
