Significant advances in catalysis science are required to develop the alternative energy schemes necessary to break free from our dependence on fossil fuel energy sources. This imperative is particularly important given the rising threat from climate change. This research program is aimed at developing robust, selective and sustainable catalysts for generating fuels from the end products of combustion, reactions driven by renewable energy. Use of abundant first row transition metals is absolutely necessary in order to carry these transformations at the scales required to power the planet in future years.
