Catalysis is a process by which a catalyst dramatically improves the rate and selectivity of a chemical reaction. More than 90% of all processes in the chemical industry rely on catalysis, allowing for the manufacture of products in energy efficient and environmentally benign ways. Understanding how catalysts work in minute detail is key to the development of new and improved catalysts. The application of catalysis to problems in solar energy capture and storage is one of the fields biggest scientific challenges. This CRC will develop catalysts capable of harnessing sunlight and using it to catalytically generate carbon free fuels.
