Most remote, northern, and Indigenous communities rely on diesel as the primary source of electricity generation and heating, which puts energy security at risk due to high costs of electricity, and environmental and health concerns. The proposed research on renewable energy-based off-grid microgrids aims to seek technology solutions to reduce reliance on diesel and enhance energy security in these communities, where a novel multidimensional operational framework will be developed to significantly improve reliability and resiliency and realize automatic and intelligent protection and control of the system. It will promote economic growth and greatly benefit remote communities in Canada and beyond.
