Summary Electroencephalography (EEG) is a versatile tool that can assess human cortical activity with precise temporal accuracy. Information in time and frequency domains can capture cortical changes reflective of cognitive processes, such as attention, and in response to experimental interventions, such as non-invasive brain stimulation, making it a cornerstone of Dr. Staines' research program. Currently, Dr. Staines has a NeuroScan SynAmps2 EEG system (Compumedics, purchased in 2005) that has reached the end of its lifespan. The system is discontinued and repairs are no longer supported by the original company. The software to run it has not been upgraded and does not run on Windows 10, the operating system used by all lab computers. In addition, the EEG caps necessary for system function have wear and associated loss of elasticity that occurs over time, impacting the electrode placement and contact with the scalp. Replacing the caps will enhance the accuracy of the readings by improving the contact with the skin and will include multiple sizes to provide options to further improve the fit. A timely replacement of the EEG system will allow for the continuation of studies that use EEG to evaluate the important role of attention in modulating sensory information to enhance motor control, thus providing critical information to the fields of sensorimotor integration, cognitive neuroscience and motor control. The EEG system will be critical for the team's studies of the neural mechanisms associated with sensorimotor neuroplasticity, cognitive neuroscience, oculomotor processes; and will both strengthen existing collaborations and enhance development of new collaborative teams. HQP from all of the team members' research groups will have access to training and use of the equipment. Equipment The EEG equipment requested will replace Dr. Staines' current system. The total cost for the EEG system, including necessary amplifiers, caps, and software for stimulation delivery, data collection, and analysis, is $102,641.49.
