The source of gold and fluid evolution of the Klondike gold district, Yukon Territory

This proposal will investigate the formation and source of gold in the Lone Star gold deposit, Yukon. This will be done using a combination of detailed diamond drill core logging, reflected light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy to determine different generation of sulfide and gold mineralization and common alteration minerals associated with the gold mineralization. The different vein generations and their relative timing with be determined using cross cutting relationships. Molybdenite dating will be used to identify the date of formation. This will be followed by laser ablation inductively couple plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) spot analyses, LA-ICPMS map analyses, secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) on selected pyrite generations. These data will be used to understand the source and evolution of the fluids and metals within the system. The pyrite trace element and sulfur isotope data will be supplemented with fluid inclusion analyses to gain an understanding of the salinity, temperature of formation, and CO2 content of the fluids. These data will then be used to develop a geological model for the formation of the deposit which will then be used to identify areas else where in the district that are also prospective for mineralization.
