英文摘要
The increased reliance of today's society on energetic materials for use in propellants, explosives, pyrotechnics, aerospace and mining has amplified the need to develop materials capable of storing and releasing substantial amounts of energy. At the same time, environmental concerns must also be taken into consideration as the production and use of currently employed energetic materials is often associated with toxic by-products such as SOx, lead and mercury. Thus, new innovations in green energetic materials are needed; yet manufacturing green energetic materials is currently limited by a lack of industry-academia knowledge transfer, impeding the integration of these materials into the worldwide market. To address this challenge, General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems - Canada Inc. (GD-OTS Canada) has partnered with the Brusso and Murugesu groups at the University of Ottawa to design new nitrogen-rich compounds that combine high-energy density with controlled energy release. These will not only eliminate the toxic by-products associated with traditional energetic materials, but will also address safe storage and transfer via the complex salt formation approach. Highly qualified personnel involved in this collaborative project will receive unique training offered by the teams at GD-OTS Canada and uOttawa, thereby acquiring a rare set of skills in the design and optimization of green energetic materials, leading to a smooth transition from academia to industry. Furthermore, the knowledge gained by this NSERC-Alliance research program will be beneficial to industry in Canada and also worldwide.
