The research proposed herein involves the design and synthesis of a magnetic porous materials platform for applications in biocatalysis/bio-based sensing, DNA and RNA extraction kits, and wastewater analysis/treatment.Porous materials are designed and synthesized to encapsulate and protect biocatalysts to improve their performance and longevity in the production of pharmaceutical compounds and fine chemicals and in bio-based sensing applications. Biocatalysis is in line with several of the principles of green chemistry, and is important for the sustainable future of chemical industries.Related porous materials are also designed and synthesized to capture chemical contaminants that interfere with DNA and RNA extraction in genetic and viral testing kits. This is important to ensure accuracy of testing including genetic and COVID-19 testing.Lastly, structurally similar porous materials are designed and synthesized for wastewater analysis and treatment applications, specifically the removal of organic contaminants from water. In all cases, the porous materials are integrated with magnetic nanoparticles to ensure the facile removal of the porous material composite after the material has performed the desired function.
