We are requesting introduction systems (i.e., high-sensitivity desolvating nebulizer, hydride generation system, and high TDS introduction and autodillution kit) to upgrade an analytical platform dedicated to high sensitivity and versatile analysis of environmental samples. The proposed items allow for increasing the sensitivity of analysis in complex matrices and further expand the array of elements that can be analyzed at very low concentrations. This upgrade will strongly support several funded research programs (NSERC, ArcticNet) requiring the analysis of multiple metals (oil)s in highly diversified and complex environmental, human and biological matrices. Our current MS platform configuration limits our ability to investigate inorganic contaminants and biometals present at very low concentrations in complex matrices. We are also limited in the spectrum of elements we can investigate, because some elements of high interest for environmental and human health (e.g., Hg, Sb, As) cannot be properly analyzed by our instrument in their current configuration. Currently, there are no available introduction systems at the Université de Sherbrooke to upgrade our instruments to reach the sensitivity and versatility we need to support our fast-evolving and expanding research programs. The acquisition of the requested introduction systems will consolidate our position as leaders in the biogeochemistry and environmental geochemistry fields and provide new training opportunities and research directions in the environmental and health sciences.
