In the last 5 years, the Shankar Lab has made noteworthy innovations in carbon nitride (CN) based fluorescent 2D materials such as CNs with a deep valence band, doped CNs with a narrow bandgap, carboxylated and amine-rich CNs, carbon-rich CNs, etc. The Shankar Lab has mostly studied the applications of these CNs in photocatalysis and photovoltaics. This project will deploy carbon nitrides in sensing devices that exploit the electrocatalytic behavior of CNs and the sensitivity of their photoluminescence to various vapor-phase and liquid-phase analytes. Prof. Sanket Goel is an emerging leader in low cost, microfluidic sensing platforms for chemical sensing and point-of-care biodiagnostics. A secondary goal of this project is to initiate and establish a long-term research collaboration between the Shankar Lab in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Alberta and the Goel Lab in the Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering at BIT-Pilani (Hyderabad Campus), India. Prof. Sanket Goel is a UofA alumnus having obtained his PhD in the ECE department at the UofA in. A PhD student enrolled at BITS-Pilani who is jointly supervised by Prof. Goel and Prof. Shankar will travel to the UofA and study the electrocatalytic and photoluminescence response of carbon nitride-based microfluidic and millimeter-sized sensing devices to analytes such as CO2, glucose, lactate and dopamine. One or more jointly authored publications are expected from this work. If this initial project is successful, larger grant applications in the field of sensors are planned.
