IoT envisions complex systems that interconnect a plethora of smart devices, embedded with sensors and actuators, through the Internet or other network technology. It is estimated that by 2023, IoT devices will account for half of all networked devices worldwide. The main value proposition of IoT is a dramatic expansion of control and monitoring capabilities, allowing businesses to transform data into actionable intelligence and improved operational decisions. In this proposed industry-academia project between the Ontario-based IoT company, Stratosfy, and the University of Ottawa, we will devise high-fidelity IoT simulators and utilize these simulators both for detecting anomalies in business operations as well as for ensuring the fulfillment of compliance requirements. The research conducted throughout the project closely aligns with Stratosfy's needs and is thus expected to increase the company's competitiveness and profitability. To demonstrate the usefulness of the project outcomes, we will benchmark the outcomes on real-world systems at Stratosfy. While motivated by Stratosfy's priorities, the project will be of direct interest to the broader IoT community at large, noting that the challenges addressed by the project are common to a much wider set of IoT systems. The research will be conducted at the University of Ottawa's newly founded IoT lab (https://www.uoIoT.ca). This lab is the first Canadian research laboratory of its kind dedicated to improving the trustworthiness of IoT applications. The HQP resulting from this project will possess highly sought-after skills in a national IT labour market that is facing a shortage of qualified staff in software engineering and IoT.
