The objective of this research project is to develop and improve tools and methods for the management of our water resources. The motivation comes from the need to achieve a sustainable use of water resources, in particular groundwater, for the benefit of the Canadian population as well as ecosystems. The objective of the sustainable use of groundwater is the prevention of its depletion and its contamination. Another objective is that groundwater extraction by pumping must maintain the integrity of ecosystems because groundwater flow into streams and rivers is vital to maintain flow during drier periods and it directly affects aquatic ecosystems. To reach the objective of sustainable use of water, computer models are required to simulate as accurately as possible the water cycle at the scale of a catchment. This research project will improve the current capabilities of these models by adding sedimentation processes into an integrated hydrologic model to represent more rigorously the exchange of groundwater and surface water in streams. Some research will also focus on the simulation of contaminants in catchments. The new capabilities of the model will be unique and not found in any other existing model. The research project will thus provide a unique computer model that will help increase our understanding of the interaction between surface water and groundwater and will help to better manage water resources. One tangible outcome of the project will be the transfer of knowledge, including the availability of the models developed, for other scientists and professionals that are responsible for water management. In addition to the scientific aspects, a key objective of this proposal is to train highly qualified personnel in the fundamental and applied aspects of water resources. During the project, two Master and four Doctoral students will be actively participating in the research and will obtain degrees. Once they graduate, these students will be highly-trained professionals with the advanced skills required to address pressing issues in water resources. The training they will receive during their studies will allow them to work in academia, government or industry, and contribute to the sound management of our water resources.
