Reality capture technologies such as terrestrial laser scanners (TLSs) are commonly used to collect accurate, three-dimensional data of the built environment. Models constructed from these data are to develop building information models (BIMs). BIMs allow more efficient planning of maintenance and renovations and overall facility management. BIM accuracy is critically dependent on the accuracy and completeness of the TLS data. Hundreds if not thousands of TLS instrument locations may be needed for complex sites such as industrial process plants, airports and shopping malls. Careful planning of a TLS survey is critical to meet BIM requirements while minimizing labour costs, which include both field data collection and post-processing. Current practice is largely an ad hoc process based on operator experience. This project will develop a new method for planning TLS surveys with the aim of reducing the costs of data acquisition and post-campaign data processing. It will provide valuable training for a full-time MSc student and an undergraduate student who will gain industry-relevant skills for the planning, execution and analysis of TLS realty-capture projects.
