Access to private or leased land is currently not a simple problem. Landowners would like to know who is on their land, when, and for what purpose. Determining the landowner to get the necessary access permissions is often challenging, leading to access without permission. The potential for danger or damage to property is often not obvious without notifications that are time-consuming to post. In response, landowners often adopt a broad no trespassing approach barring all activities on their land even though they may not object to some. To improve and simplify the current process, Western Heritage is building the online SaskLander Platform that provides an easy-to-use map interface for managing interactions between landowners and those seeking land access. Other agencies like Municipalities, Resource Management, and Legal liens also have rules regarding land use. Saskatchewan Polytechnic will augment Western Heritage's experience in Web map-based delivery of GIS information by providing the research expertise and student learning to roadmap, prototype, and test the use of complex metadata. This project will improve the user experience of the online platform by incorporating multiple strategies that would not otherwise be accessible to Western Heritage. The resulting application will reduce the effort to control access and obtain access permissions while providing support for future enhancements and data sharing.
