Improving Human Machine Interface Learnability : Cognitive Readiness and IT Learning Experience

This research project aims to help organizations develop technological interfaces (e.g., software, website,mobile application) that are easy to learn for their users and, moreover, to ensure that users are ready to usethese interfaces. To do this, the research team and partner organizations (National Bank of Canada, CanadianNational Railway, Language Research Development Group and Société Radio-Canada) will conduct a series ofstudies with various types of users (i.e., citizens, employees, consumers) using various technological interfacesin different contexts of use. These studies will identify, using neurophysiological and machine learningmethods, whether users are cognitively ready to optimally use a technological interface and when users areactually learning. The results of this research project will enable Canadian organizations to put in placepractices for the development of technological interfaces that optimize their learnability. Given the strategicimportance of information technologies and digital transformation in the Canadian economy, severalstakeholders (e.g., employees, suppliers, customers, citizens) will benefit from results of this research project,which will therefore have both an economic and social impact for Canada.
