英文摘要
Bone implants may fail for a number of reasons, including poor integration into bone caused by underlying conditions such as aging, osteoporosis or diabetes, or due to incomplete new bone growth into the implant called osseointegration. This leads to pain and the need for replacement surgeries. In this proposal, we will use new materials engineering manufacturing methods to produce 3D-printed implants that contain a unique porous geometry to promote new bone formation inside of the implant. In addition, a key focus of this work will be the development and application of layer-by-layer coatings containing molecules targeted to improve bone regeneration to improve implant outcomes. The manufacturing techniques for the porous implants and coatings methods will be optimized and evaluated using advanced surface characterization with electron microscopy. The interaction of implants with bone tissue will be further understood through the development of advanced characterization tools that enable a high-resolution and 3D view of the coated implant surface and interaction with bone. This will lead to improved bone implant devices for applications in dentistry and orthopedics for Canadians in the future.
