Carotenoids, vitamin A, beta carotene, lycopene, canthaxanthin, and astaxanthin, have many known health benefits and can be converted into nutraceuticals in the form of supplements and food additives. They can also be used as a natural colourant for the food industry, cosmetic industry, and pharmaceutical industry. These carotenoids can also be used as an additive in animal feed formulations.LCY Biosciences Inc. an LCY Chemical Corp. subsidiary, focuses on chemical production through bio-based raw materials and sustainable processes. In 2018, LCY acquired the former BioAmber plant in Sarnia, Ontario with intentions of restarting the production of bio-based succinic acid and also to begin the production of bio-based carotenoids using the LCY Biosciences proprietary biotechnology platform. LCY Biosciences' production of bio-based succinic acid is an established process, but the process of producing bio-based carotenoids is under development. LCY & Lambton College have built a positive partnership through a previous project that worked to optimize LCY's fermentation process. Building on this success, LCY's main objective of this project is to develop and optimize the downstream purification process for the named carotenoids products and establish the QA/QC procedures. The success of this project will be instrumental for LCY to move forward on their carotenoids production line and commercialization. The commercialization of this carotenoid product will not only economically benefit Canada through economic growth and job creation, but it will also environmentally benefit Canada by using agriculture biomass as feedstock instead of petrochemical sources and minimizing the chemical waste production through the fermentation process instead of chemical synthetic method to produce carotenoids.
