As Canada Research Chair in Fuel Cell Science and Technology Development, Erik Kjeang is working to enhance the longevity of devices used for electrochemical energy systems, with a primary focus on fuel cells. Such advancements will have a positive impact on the sustainability of the energy systems, reduce the cost of the technology, and accelerate their commercialization. The main research objectives are to:1) Develop in-depth knowledge of the key degradation mechanisms from root cause to failure in electrochemical devices2) Develop modeling tools for longevity predictions in electrochemical energy systems3) Demonstrate strategies for longevity enhancements in electrochemical energy systemsElectrochemical energy systems are anticipated to play a key enabling role for the impending global transformation from fossil-fuel based transportation to renewable energy based transportation that uses clean fuels like hydrogen. The fuel cell industry has the potential to become a billion dollar supply chain in Canada and capture a significant part of the global automotive fuel cell market. Moreover, their increased market penetration will substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollution, which will translate to significant economic and environmental benefits for Canada.
