We will develop versatile capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (CMUTs) that use a unique Polymer-Graphene, PolyGr, composite developed by our collaborators at the University of Manchester as a device layer (active membrane). CMUTs have a wide range of applications, including pressure sensors, speakers, ultrasound transmitters and receivers, gas sensors, and liquid and chemical sensors. PPolyGr has superior properties compared to the device layers currently used in CMUTs. It is particularly attractive for aquatic applications of CMUTs where the polymer layer can also function as a dielectric to protect against short circuits in ionized liquids.
