Cells of the human B cell lineage can be roughly divided into pre-B, resting-B, B-blast, and plasma-cell stages based on established criteria of cell morphology, expression of HLA-DR (Ia) antigens, and expression of cytoplasmic, membrane, and secretory immunoglobulin (Ig) [1]. A characteristic array of cell surface differentiation antigens are also expressed on B cells or B cell subsets at different stages of maturation. Several B cell-specific or B cell-associated antigens have recently been defined with monoclonal antibodies (M.Ab) [e. g., 2–6]. Some of these M.Ab comprised the 25 different M.Ab reactive with B cell and cALLA antigens that constituted the B cell protocol of this Workshop.
