This project aims at the synthesis and characterization of mono- to tetranuclear vinyl ruthenium complexes of carbazoles, tetrathiafulvalenes and triarylmethyl-carbocations of the Crystal violet type as highly efficient polyelectrochromics for the low energy régime of the visible and the near infrared (NIR). In-depth IR- UV/Vis/NIR and EPR-studies and accompanying quantum chemical calculations will provide us with detailed insight into the electronic structures of these compounds in all their available oxidation states. We seek here for an understanding of the electronic origins of their properties and their behaviour. Parallel to these basic studies we will modify our complexes in a manner that allows for their covalent attachment onto transparent semiconducting titania or indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes. In cooperation with Professor Lukas Schmidt-Mende form the Physics Department at the University of Konstanz, we will go beyond the exploration of the molecular complexes and implement them into polyelectrochromic devices like smart windows or tandem cells of dye-sensitized solar cells of the Grätzel-type and electrochromic windows to light-triggered self-dimming devices.
