0084632SoomIn modern engineering practice, systems and components that rely onfrictional response are ubiquitous. Clutches, brakes and rubbing sealsare well known examples from mechanical engineering. Despite the apparentsimplicity of the sliding contact problem, its economic importance, andthe efforts that have been devoted to research on this topic recentdecades, a detailed physical understanding of many aspects of behaviorremains elusive, particularly those associated with thermal effects. Inthis project, supported under the initiative on Exploratory Research on Model Based Simulation, we will develop a computational mechanics approach tomodeling these problems based on a multi-level boundary element methodwhich can be scaled up to solve large problems. An unsteadythree-dimensional thermomechanical formulation that includes surfacetexture and near-surface nonlinearities will be implemented. A speedor temperature dependent friction will be employed. The computationalmethods, while fully three-dimensional in nature, will initially beapplied to a series of rotating ring geometries that will be studied in aparallel program of physical experiments. The experiments will becompared with computational results based on full field deformationanalysis of a stationary ring or disc under both constant and unsteadysliding conditions. ***
