Purpose : The purpose of this stud was to develop a new biomimetic surface modification of titanium implat with phospho-amino acid and evaluate its effectiveness on initial attachment of osteoblasts MC3T3-E1. Method Commercially pure titanium (cp Ti disks diameter : 5.8 mm thickness : 2 mm ; machined surface Ra : 0.15 micron JIS 2 ; GC Co, Tokyo, Japan) were ultrasonically treated with 10 N hydrochloric acid (HCl) and ultrapure water at room temperature for 30 min respectively. Then these disks were modified with O-phospho-L-threonine (P-Thr) at 37 C degree far 12 hrs followed ultrasonic rinsing with ultrapure water for 10 min. Untreated disks were used as a control. X-ray hotoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) chemically analyzed the P-Thr-modified disk surfaces in comparison with the control. In addition initial attachment of osteoblasts MC3T3-E1 to each of modifed surfaces and the control was evaluated by the percentage of attached cells at 10 30 60 min respectively. Results : XPS revealed that P-Thr chemically bonded to the surface treated with HCl and ultrapure water since the significant chemical shift (t-test : P < 0.05) of P 2p binding energy of P-Thr was detected. Percentage at 10 min of cellular attachment to the P-Thr-modified surface was significantly higher than that of the control (one-way ANOV and Bonferroni/Dunn's test : P < 0,01). Conclusion : It is concluded that chemical banding of P-Thr to the cp Ti surface treated with HCl and ultrapure water was detected and the P-Thr-modified surface can accelerate the initial osteoblasts attachment
