The responses from elderly were not voluntary, and almost were only replies to the utterances of the carer and were short. 3. The amount of talking to dementia-afflicted and bed-ridden elderly was significantly higher than that directed to non-dementia and wheelchair elderly suggestiong that the carer seemed to deliberately address the former. 4. Understandably, the frequency of the responses by the elderly who had speech impediments was significantly lower than that of those who did not. The frequency of responses when talking for the activation of life was higher for the elderly afficted with dementia and for those confined to wheel-chairs.
