The scientific study of the optimal growth conditions for mushroom farming, such as culture medium, temperature, humidity, illumination, etc, has been making slow progress. By observing the bioelectric-potential of mushrooms, which is considered to be closely related to the growth, the relationship between light stimulus conditions (wavelength, brightness, and illumination methods) and the morphogenetic properties has been investigated. A new type of light source was developed out of studies of the optimum farming conditions from an engineering standpoint. Photographs were taken non-destructively of the growth of fungal threads by MRI. Furthermore, with regard to the effect of the light quality on the morphogenesis, genetic investigations were made into the expression of DNA by an advanced study of bio-molecules.Here are the outlines of this study :(1)Systematic changes in light stimulus factor :An improvement was made in the accurate auto-measurement system for recording bio-electric … More potentials stimulated by illumination in a purpose-built growth chamber.(2)Measurement of very weak spontaneous magnetic field :The very weak spontaneous magnetic field generated by the mushrooms were measured using a SQUID as a non-destructive and non-invasive measuring technique. The effectiveness of the use of the measured results in the study of ripeness of the fungal threads in the culture medium or growth levels of the pileus was evaluated.(3)Development of a light source at the mushroom farming site :Using the improved purpose-built simple growth chamber, comparative experiments were conducted on morphogenetics with various light stimuli. Bio-electric potential sensing was also undertaken at the same time in order to make health checks on the mushrooms. The effectiveness of the use of mushrooms as a bio-sensor as an environmental monitor was also studied. Currently, a comparison study of morphogenesis under various illumination regimes has been conducted, including continuous illumination, fluctuated illumination, pulsed illumination, etc. However, no clear conclusions have yet been arrived at.(4)Cross sectional photographs taken using MRI :The photographs of the mushroom growth process from fungus through to the formation of primordium have been taken, non-destructively and non-invasively, every two weeks. The results have led to a perspective study of the mushroom ripeness.(5)Genetic analysis :With regard to the influence of the characteristics of illumination on the morphogenesis, the messenger RNA(mRNA) was detected using the DD method and compared for analysis.
