The traditional construction material used to line buildings in many parts of the world (wall and ceiling) is gypsum plasterboard, due to its versatility, purchase price, and ease of use. However, the disposal of gypsum is damaging to the environment due to the creation of hydrogen sulfides when in the presence of moisture. The artificially low purchase price hides a significant disposal liability both financial and environmental. Additionally, the thermal conductivity is suboptimal which leads to reduced energy efficiency. The objective of this project is to find a viable, recycled construction material that is both environmentally focused and conforms to key building regulations for thermal efficiency, reaction to fire, and resistance to the passage of sound.iKoustic has developed novel testing methodologies and a robust research and development process that help it innovate new acoustic construction products. iKoustic will therefore take on the responsibility of specifying and testing the new product to ensure its compliance and superior performance. This will include:• Airborne and impact testing in-house and at accredited acoustic laboratories.• Thermal conductivity testing at an accredited testing facility.• Resistance to fire testing at a fire testing facility.Market research into the current options available in the UK shows that the reliance on standard construction materials has led to a blind spot with regard to the production of new alternative and recycled materials. This recycled product will be innovative as a green construction material while providing a greater level of sound insulation, sound absorption & improved thermal efficiency.According to the "Plasterboard Sustainability Action Plan" of October 2010 published by DEFRA, "approximately 270 million m2 of plasterboard is produced, distributed and used in the UK". Given the environmental impact of improperly disposed of plaster, it was necessary to implement an action plan for more capacity to recycle plasterboard. iKoustic's recycled paper boards will biodegrade naturally, meaning that waste has far less of an impact and is more easily recycled and assist the construction industry in adopting a more environmentally friendly product in the long run.Alongside alleviating waste problems, the thermal conductivity of paper is lower than plasterboard, which has implications for the proper insulation of homes. Better insulation will decrease the reliance on use of gas/electricity to heat homes.
