Every year, Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) causes 24% of all deaths worldwide or 18million/annum, with 85% of fatalities due to stroke, heart failure (HF) and atrial fibrillation (AF). The UK has over 6 million CVD sufferers, costing £7.4billion/annum in healthcare costs and £15.8billion/annum in economic losses.Traditionally, clinicians have focused on physiological markers (patient-weight/blood-pressure etc) to detect worsening CVD. Unfortunately, these markers appear late in the time course of decompensation. Relying on them leaves little time to respond before hospitalization is necessary. Many studies have shown that AF drives HF pathophysiology and vice versa. According to the Framingham Heart Study, AF occurred in 57% of the individuals with HF. This leads to huge increased risk of hospitalization, stroke and death. Therefore, this presents a strong case to have a single device that simultaneously treats both HF and the greatest risk of AF, namely stroke. Current approaches to treat these complex patients, suffering from AF & HF, requires multiple expensive devices and risky procedures.Through this project, RECO and their collaborator AuriGen are developing world's first implantable cardiac monitoring sensor 'LAP-Sense' for remote/continuous monitoring of CVD patients, which is fully integrated with a Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion (LAAO) device. This 18-month industrial research project utilizes RECO's sensor technology, which will be integrated with AuriGen's Zenith device to be used for LAP monitoring and LAAO.RECO & AuriGen, based on feedback and requests from cardiologists, are developing a product to synergistically address needs of millions AF & HF sufferers. This will offer improved diagnostics in addition to the stroke prevention capabilities of an LAAO, in a single device, implanted in the same procedure, elevating the current standard of care to new levels of safety, efficacy and cost effectiveness.
