The nCOMM project focuses on using cutting-edge wireless networking technology to generate high-quality volumetric videos in real time. Volumetric video is a technique that captures a three-dimensional space, such as a location or performance. It is used in a variety of industries, such as VR/AR experiences, education and training, video games, film/television production, and digital marketing. Typical applications include the production of lifelike digital twins (objects or people) for entertainment and telecommunications and immersive experiences that allow users to interact with virtual objects more intuitively.By streamlining the process of volumetric video production, the nCOMM project aims to open new business opportunities outside of the entertainment, gaming, and sports industries, such as in digital twins, surveying, real estate, and healthcare. In this project, NEPHELIE, a Bristol-based SME, will build a prototype demonstrator of a network solution called nCOMM, based on research from the High-Performance Networks Group of the University of Bristol. A new, AI-driven, technology called Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) will be used to generate incredibly realistic and detailed images which will be delivered over an optimised network. The nCOMM networking solution incorporates several key innovations, including highly accurate timing to support the synchronization of dozens of high-resolution cameras, ultra-low-latency and high-bandwidth wireless video data transfers to support AI-driven volumetric video applications, and dynamic adjustment of the network operating parameters according to the application's requirements.NEPHELIE will demonstrate that combining nCOMM's highly-efficient wireless network with NeRFs' ability to create detailed and realistic 3D renderings will produce a flexible and adaptable volumetric video solution with a clear business growth potential in various industry sectors. Using NeRF technology for volumetric video offers numerous benefits over traditional methods, including the ability to support real-time applications and create accurate 3D renderings even under difficult environmental conditions. The project will involve reviewing the industry's state-of-the-art, conducting market research, creating system designs and specifications, implementing a proof-of-concept demonstration, and producing a final report with a roadmap towards the commercialisation of the nCOMM solution.NEPHELIE intends to use its previous expertise in leading large innovation projects and its experience in working with local businesses, universities, and government organizations to successfully deliver the project and capitalise on this promising business opportunity by commercialising the nCOMM solution. The project findings will be made available to the wider UK industry so everyone can benefit from the project's learnings thus stimulating new economic growth opportunities at a regional and national level.
