Public descriptionVietnam is one of the most vulnerable countries to the impacts of climate change. The frequency and severity of typhoons are expected to increase consequently increasing the risks of wind damage, flooding and landslide. Low lying areas of Vietnam, the Mekong Rive Delta (MRD), are particularly vulnerable to sea level rise.In recent years rapid economic growth has been enabled by improvements to the transportation infrastructure including major bridges replacing less reliable ferries. These bridges allow efficient transportation of goods manufactured in MRD to HCMC and provide emergency access during natural disasters such as typhoons and flood events when ferries are unable to operate safely. In southern Vietnam, particularly in MRD, land subsidence due to excessive ground water extraction is exacerbating the risks of sea level rise due to climate change. This has an impact on daily life and key infrastructure assets, including major bridges.UbiPOS and the University of Nottingham (UNOTT) have collaborated to develop GeoSHM, an SHM solution that exploits satellite data for bridge monitoring and remote sensing of ground motion. GeoSHM will be deployed in Vietnam to develop sustainable communities and cities (SDG 11) and mitigate the risks of climate change (SDG 13) by (i) monitoring the impact of climate change on bridge performance and long-term ground level, (ii) empowering the maintenance of key bridge assets through smart data processing and (iii) ensuring the ongoing safe operation of these assets to underpin future growth and maintain emergency access. GeoSHM will enable the implementation of plans to efficiently maintain the bridges and ensure fully functioning road networks during and after extreme events (T11.5; T13.1). The data provided by GeoSHM will support the development of national policies and strategies to mitigate the risks of climate changes (T11.b; T13.2) and enable more effective climate-change-related planning (T13.3).This feasibility project will enable UbiPOS and UNOTT to extend their work to the Vietnamese context. An SHM workshop in HCMC will demonstrate the capabilities of SHM to local engineers and researchers, and establish the key user needs of infrastructure operators in Vietnam. The Vietnamese partner will visit the UK to meet the SHM research group at Nottingham and see the implementation of the GeoSHM system on the Forth Road Bridge (Edinburgh, UK). Having established the feasibility of deploying GeoSHM in Vietnam and developed working relationships with researchers, engineers and government officials, UbiPOS will be well prepared to move on to a demonstration project.
