Demonstrating the commercial viability of Mobile Power's multi-purpose battery for e-mobility and generator replacement in West Africa

The African transport sector is the fastest growing in the world. Globally the number of vehicles will double by 2050 and the majority of this growth will be in Africa. The lack of adequate roads overwhelmed by growing traffic congestion has seen a boom in motorcycles. In fact, over 50% of vehicles sold in West Africa are motorcycles, compared to 3% in the US.At the same time, the electricity grid is not available for over 55% of the population. Generators in Nigeria have eight times the capacity of the national grid's capacity. Nigerians spend $14billion a year on fuel for generators and the government subsidises the cost of fuel at a huge cost to the state. The UNDP state that globally the amount spent directly on fossil fuel subsidies is three times the annual amount needed to eradicate global extreme poverty.Technical advances in electric vehicles in China and India have seen an explosion in cheap electric motorbikes. Africa has the richest renewable energy resources on the planet. However the issue is power distribution not generation. Innovative battery technology is needed to unlock an electric vehicle revolution in rural Africa.Mobile Power has designed and tested an energy distribution ecosystem that supplies affordable, clean power to poor households and enterprises in off-grid communities across West Africa using a pay-as-you-go smart battery rental system. The core innovation is the cost-effective distribution of electricity off-grid using batteries. Mobile Power's batteries are charged at solar charging stations called "MOPO Hubs". The MOPO Batteries are then rented directly from the Hub or distributed through MOPO Agents using our smart battery technology. Our inbuilt security system prevents unauthorised activation of MOPO batteries and unauthorised charging.This project will focus on launching Mobile Power's new product- the MOPOMax Battery to be used in the electric vehicle battery-swapping and generator replacement market in Sierra Leone and Liberia:1. IMPROVING TRANSPORT NETWORKS: The MOPOMax Batteries will power electric motorbikes using a battery swap model, renting out the motorbikes and batteries. This rental model makes it affordable to the market and cheaper than fossil-fuel alternatives.2. REPLACING HOUSEHOLD GENERATORS: The MOPOMax Batteries have a second life that will be used to provide electricity for households and micro-enterprises for appliances such as freezers, sewing machines or agricultural machinery.
